Is Christian Salt Kosher?

By Kris  //  Food, Products  //  View Comments

For the absolute best Christian oven fries, ever“What the heck’s the matter with Christian salt?” Joe Godlewski asked reporters while sipping a beer in his Cresaptown, Maryland living room.

Apparently tired of seeing the Jews’ Zionist grip on the salt industry, Godlewski developed Blessed Christian Salt, the first kosher salt to be blessed by an Episcopal Priest and marketed to Christian chefs.

In his interview with Examiner.com (full article), Godlewski elaborates:

“This is about keeping Christianity in front of the public so that it doesn’t die. I want to keep Christianity on the table, in the household, however I can do it.”

I guess nobody told him that kosher salt isn’t part of some elaborate Jewish marketing scheme. Still, I’m more curious if the salt from an Episcopalian blessed salt mine still comes out kosher or if it creates some sort of weird inter-faith hybrid like Chrismukkah or Sarah Jessica Parker. read more

Five Books Better Than “Twilight”

By Andi  //  Books  //  View Comments

twilightTwilight is available on DVD Tuesday and though I’ve willfully neglected to see the movie, I have read the book. It’s mediocre writing at best, and some of the story elements are ridiculous, yet, the book remains readable.  Readable enough, in fact, that I’ve acquired the second in the series to be started sometime this week.  I’ve convinced myself that I must read the series so that I may, if nothing else, be well versed in how to bash it.

I’m usually a sucker (ha ha) for vampire fiction and paranormal type romance, but even by trashy chick-lit standards, Twilight wasn’t that great.  I’m clearly outside the target demographic of tween and teen girls, but good young adult fiction writing should be able to hold up to a slightly older audience. Young Adult writers need to stay away from the topic of vampires if they can’t figure out how to deal with the adult situations presented. read more

Cheat a Girl Scout out of a badge and make your own cookies!

By Jon  //  Food  //  View Comments

Girl Scout CookiesSince the 1920s, the Girl Scouts of America have cornered the market on delicious cookie creations. The Girl Scouts started with a simple sugar cookie, leading to the expansion of a more complete line throughout the past 80 years. I’ve often wondered why the Girl Scouts don’t just sell their cookies year-round in super markets or online. The Girl Scout Counsel designed the fundraiser to teach the scouts about the value of money, community, and teamwork. I say they’re being pretty darn protective of a potentially lucrative business. Is scarcity the only leverage a Girl Scout has to sell multiple boxes to a single customer?

Well the jig is up Girl Scouts. Those tired of your cookie monopoly have liberated the public from your cookie stronghold. In fact, people have already cracked the recipe for your delicious and fattening cookies. Empowering the amateur bakers across the country, several sites have already posted recipes to many of the popular Girl Scout cookies.

Now to unveil a recipe for one of my favorites…

Mattel gives Dora the Explorer a trampy make-over?

By Jon  //  Products, TV  //  View Comments

Dora the ExplorerNickelodeon and Mattel, makers of Barbie, are putting a new spin on the Dora the Explorer consumer products. The “problem” with the Dora franchise is that its geared towards preschoolers. This usually means that by around age 8, children lose interest entirely. Mattel, in an effort to extend the character’s shelf life, have decided age Dora in some consumer products to re-capture the girls from 8 to tweens. The new Dora will only exist in the toy-line and not on television, but the new look still has parents outraged.

Bloggers on the Huffington Post are calling the new Dora a “tramp” based the teaser silhouette of the character released last week. The silhouette left parents to believe that Dora’s long top would be a mini-skirt. After yesterday’s big reveal (she has leggings), many parents have calmed down, yet, still remained concerned. The president of Nickelodeon Viacom consumer products, Leigh Anne Brodsky, even spoke to the press to reassure the public that Dora isn’t going to change. The new look is for an interactive doll that plugs into your computer and aimed at tweens (think Teddy Ruxpin 2.0).

By Andi  //  Food, Web  //  View Comments

Happy St. Patrick’s Day AbD readers. Its time for last call.   Hope that everyone had a fun and safe night.

Again, don’t watch that video if you’re offended by words.  Soon I’m going to stop typing that disclaimer because it’s stupid.  It is time to go sleep off the oncoming hangover and hope I’ve recovered in time to act normal at work tomorrow.  I wish everyone a pleasant morning.

Taking the Paper Out of Newspaper

By Jon  //  Culture, Web  //  View Comments

newspaperWith classified ads and traditional sponsors drying up, many mainstream newspapers have found their online counterparts to actually make more money than their print editions. It has left many to suspect that the newspaper as we know it is on a slow stumble towards death.

The argument has often been countered by the fact that a media never dies, it just adapts and remains functional for a niche audience. While this may be true, there is something to be said about the ease of use and functionality of a good old American newspaper. Its cheap, disposable, and can be read anywhere.

Today marks the first coffin nail in the death of newspapers. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer said that Tuesday would be their last print edition of the print paper. That’s right, a major city’s big newspaper is going online only! The New York Times article on the story mentions that it will resemble a blog-style paper, ala Huffington Post, and will remain locally focused.

Rant: Stop being a tool on Twitter

By Andi  //  Web  //  View Comments

Computer CatTwitter has been making its rounds in the public psyche for some time now. People are slowly learning that there is an art to posting on the site. Sometimes, there is a fine line between someone awesome on Twitter and someone lame.

Part of capturing that balance involves users being somewhat aware of their followers. Think before you hit update!  Nothing bothers me more than when someone abuses Twitter by over-posting. If you have that much to say, please consider getting a regular blog and just linking to it via Twitter (like this).  It will never be okay to post 27 tweets in a row, and that includes @replies and links.

Although the majority of Twitter users use the service on their computer, keep in mind, many also use it on their phone. This means a follower’s phone is beeping or playing some lame jingle every time you decide to tell people what you just ate for breakfast. With the various mobile apps for Blackberry and iPhone, almost everyone can be checking in on Twitter in their down time. When people monologue, it pushes other tweets off screen and I miss them.  This pisses me off. If you have any self-control, use it.

Of course it’s always a choice as to who someone follows, but there isn’t a quicker way to lose a friend than to abuse the system. Additionally, some people we MUST follow, or risk causing “real world” drama (i.e. family, lovers, co-workers). These people love you and will be the least likely to call you out for something so minor, but it bothers them too!

The worst users are the people that actually answer the question Twitter poses at login: “What are you doing?”  Seriously? Don’t feed the beast. You all know the type. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about… read more
