I thought it sounded lame before I read them, but I was SO wrong. You'd probably like the Southern Vampire ones too, they've got a good mix of humor, violence and smut. I haven't read ANY of those except for Twilight and Anne Rice. In fact.. I watched the movie, and then proceeded to read all 4 books... and since then, I have only picked them up to hand them to my mother. As for Anne Rice? What can I say.. I practically grew up on her works. But again, I haven't picked up one of her books since I was.. uh? 16? My one pet peeve about her stuff is pretty much what you said. Her writing is obnoxious and pretentious. Personally? Give me Poppy Z. Brite anyday. Ok, you caught me. I haven’t read ANY of those except for Twilight and Anne Rice.
